Structural Analysis

Engineering analysis of structural systems for existing buildings and proposed modifications — Kentucky and surrounding states

Structural Analysis Services

Structural analysis is the application of engineering mechanics and accepted analytical methods to evaluate the capacity, behavior, and adequacy of structural systems and components. AO Engineers, LLC performs structural analysis for existing buildings, proposed modifications, new construction projects, and forensic investigations throughout Kentucky and surrounding states.

Our structural analysis services utilize recognized engineering methods, applicable building codes and standards, and engineering software to provide technically sound, well-documented analysis results. All analysis work is performed by or under the direct supervision of licensed professional engineers.

Types of Structural Analysis We Perform

Load Analysis

Determining the loads that act on a structural system is the foundation of any structural analysis. AO Engineers calculates dead loads, live loads, wind loads, snow loads, seismic loads, and other applicable forces in accordance with ASCE 7 and applicable building code requirements. Accurate load determination is essential for evaluating existing structural capacity and designing new or modified structural elements.

Structural Capacity Evaluation

For existing buildings undergoing renovation, change of use, or addition of new loads, AO Engineers evaluates the capacity of existing structural members and systems to determine whether they can safely support the proposed loading conditions. We identify overstressed or undersized members, evaluate connection adequacy, and provide recommendations for reinforcement or replacement where required.

Load Path Analysis

Understanding how loads travel through a building from the roof to the foundation is essential for evaluating structural integrity and planning modifications. AO Engineers traces load paths through structural systems to identify critical load-bearing elements, evaluate the consequences of proposed structural changes, and ensure that modified structures maintain adequate load paths to the foundation.

Renovation and Modification Feasibility Analysis

Before undertaking structural modifications — such as removing a load-bearing wall, adding a second story, or opening up a floor plan — a structural analysis is necessary to evaluate feasibility and design replacement structural elements. AO Engineers provides pre-renovation structural analysis that informs design decisions and provides the engineering basis for modification work.

Seismic and Wind Analysis

While Kentucky is not a high seismic risk zone, portions of the state — particularly western Kentucky near the New Madrid Seismic Zone — are subject to meaningful seismic hazard. AO Engineers evaluates structural systems for seismic and wind loading in accordance with ASCE 7 and applicable building code requirements.

Analysis Standards and Methods

Our structural analysis work is performed in accordance with:

  • ASCE 7: Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures
  • International Building Code (IBC) structural provisions
  • International Residential Code (IRC) structural provisions
  • ACI 318 for concrete structures
  • AISC 360 for steel structures
  • NDS for wood structures
  • TMS 402 for masonry structures
